“Can You Hear Me Now” Teacher Education Division of Council for Exceptional Children, New Orleans, LA

This is a presentation that I have shared at several national conferences, including the Teacher Education Division of the Council for Exceptional Children in New Orleans.  The focus of this presentation is directed toward the information that can be gathered by taking a closer look at student behavior. . When student behavior is considered a communication about what is not working for the student, teachers can use the information to make changes in the learning environment or instructional style to better meet student needs.  For example, if a student is reluctant to start work on an assignment, then is slow to finish or perhaps doesn’t finish at all, a teacher can review the necessary prerequisites for completing the assignment.  The prerequisites might include, the student understanding the assignment, having the academic skills and the dispositions to complete the assignments.  “Can You Hear Me Now” helps teachers better understand how their own response to student behavior facilitates success or failure for their students.

“Engaging the Souls of Pre-Service Teachers through Critical Incident Reflection”

This presentation is built on the work of Kolb and others who use personal discovery and interpretation of life events to create meaningful learning and growth.  When used by pre-service teachers, this process can help the newly emerging teacher clarify their purpose and potential.  It helps them decide how to use what they have already learned and propels them toward seeking additional knowledge to solve problems they have uncovered during the process of reflecting on critical incidents in their own practice.
