VIDEO-TAPED CONDUCTING SESSIONS

(25% of final grade)

Description: For the second half of the course, each conductor will be videotaped in a 15 minute session with the lab band. Each grading will be a compilation of the instructor’s grading and your self-evaluation.  


TRANSPOSITION QUIZZES

(5% of final grade)



SCORE MARKING AND ANALYSIS PROJECT

(20% of final grade)

Description: For this project you will be preparing thoroughly your final conducting piece with one of the three regular ensembles.  Your score marking and charting and your rehearsal plan for this conducting will be graded.



OBSERVING PROFESSIONALS

(10% of final grade)

Description: Observations of professional conductors will be an important part of the course. 


Using the Links page or your other research, compare and contrast four recognized conductors on YouTube using the pertinent items on the Checklist below. 

  1. This “observation” report is due before Spring Break


Checklist:  In your observations, focus on observing the following in a non-judgmental way:

  1. Beat patterns which were used

  2. Was the pattern more down or up

  3. Describe exactly the physical aspects used in the preparatory beat when starting the ensemble.

  4. Were there times where the right hand was not doing a beat pattern?  If so, what was the musical reason?

  5. How did the size of the beat patterns change according to the music?

  6. Describe exactly how the left hand was used.  What was the musical reason?

  7. Describe the physical aspects used in cuing.

  8. Describe the difference in the size of physical movement of the conductor in situations with varying dynamics, varying tempi, and staccato, marcato, legato passages.



MLR SCORE READING PROGRAM

(15% of final grade)

Description: A pretest and posttest will be administered with the final grade determined on the amount of progress.  During the 12 weeks in between students may work as much as they wish on the remedial workbook.



FINAL EXAM

(25% of final grade)

Description: The final exam will consist of your conducting of the major ensemble judged by two judges and your conducting the final part of Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring with recording.

on Rite of Spring:  100% conduct entire piece,  95% up to reh 174,   90% up to reh 167,   80% up to reh 159
