MULTICULTURAL SYDNEY

Sydney ’s multicultural character derives from people who have come from over 180 nationalities.  Sydney’s cultural diversity shapes the sights, smell, tastes and sounds of daily life in the city and suburbs in a profound way.  This cosmopolitan character of Sydney may be its greatest asset, eclipsing the architectural and geographical features such as Opera House, the Harbour Bridge and Sydney’s magnificent harbour.   Sydneysiders come from all over the globe and one out of three Sydneysiders was either born elsewhere or is first generation Australian: 16.5 per cent were born in the UK and Ireland, 15.9 per cent in Southern Europe, 15.1 per cent in South East Asia, 12.5 per cent in North East Asia, 8.4 per cent in the Middle East and 5.6 per cent in New Zealand. (Collins and Costillo, 1998)
