The Rocks is perhaps the most historically significant area of modern-day Australia.
Our first field trip takes us to the historic Rocks district. This neighborhood dates back to the earliest days of the colony when the First Fleet relocated to Port Jackson (now known as Syndey Harbour) from Botany Bay. Today it houses historic relics from the first settlement, and some of the oldest buildings, churches, pubs and restaraunts in Australia. With tourism a huge draw to the Rocks district, the government of New South Wales has worked to provide lots of affordable council housing nestled right behind a thriving and upscale tourist district. We'll take a historic walk with over 40 points of interest as we learn how working class communities can survive despite Gentrification pressures.
