Welcome!

The Grand Valley State University Metropolitan Strategy Intiative welcomes you to its official website.

The GVSU Land Metropolitan Strategy is a project of the Michigan Higher Education Land Policy (MIHELP) Consortium.  As consistent with the Land Policy Program established at Michigan State University were the initiative originated, we envision this initiative as a strategic approach to link with 10 programmatic areas that emerged from the State of Michigan’s Land Use Leadership Bipartisan Council appointed by Governor Granholm in 2004.  These programmatic thrusts (Revitalizing Michigan Cities, Market Solutions to Land Use Problems, Viable Agriculture for the Future, Sustaining Michigan’s Water and Natural Resources and Related Industries, Enhanced Planning and Coordination in Land Use Decision Making, Creating Healthy Communities, Equipping State Decision Makers in Land Use, Empowering Michigan’s Citizens in Land Use, Data Collection, Information, and Analysis for Improving Land Use Policy and National Leadership Profile) are part of a comprehensive approach to land policy in the state of Michigan.  Our aim is to link Grand Valley faculty, staff and programs engaged around the 10 programmatic areas with West Michigan Land Policy organizations and our consortium partners, Michigan State University and Wayne State University.

This site will house important GVSU and other West Michigan Metropolitan strategy research results, exemplar student research, profile faculty engagement in land policy, remind readers of upcoming events.  If you are seeking local experts in particular areas of land policy, please visit the GVSU expertise page to link with faculty and staff with specific competencies.  Working directly with stakeholders and assembling mulit-institutional, multi-disciplinary teams to pursue major competitive grants and deliver research that is relevant to effective metropolitan policy making and facilitates local intergovernmental cooperation.
