IV. Continuity
- a Gestalt principle of grouping that states that when two or more elements
are aligned, they group forming an implied line (a continuation). In Figure
1, the alignment of organic shapes creates an implied curved line.
In Figure 2, two aligned shapes, although separated by numerous
shapes between, form an implied straight line across the picture plane.
Figure 3 shows a continuation formed by only one side of
several shapes. Continuations, along with other actual or implied lines, form a composition's linear structure. |
