Grand Valley State University is searching for a Chairperson for the Department of Art and Design. This web site presents a quick overview of relevant information about the Department, the University, and the Community in which we are situated.

Position Description
Grand Valley State University seeks a distinguished scholar or artist with broad intellectual interests to lead a dynamic department of art and design within a liberal arts university of 23,000 students. This position is an opportunity for a leader interested in guiding our department to the highest levels of artistic and academic achievement and vigorous participation in the realms of visual culture.

The department of art and design offers undergraduate programs for the degrees of BA/BS and BFA in studio art with an emphasis in ceramics, graphic design, illustration, jewelry/metalsmithing, painting, printmaking, or sculpture. The department also offers the BA/BS in art education, a vital and growing program dedicated to a standard of excellence in teaching and studio practice.

We seek to enhance the department in the near future with the addition of a BA degree in Art History. There are approximately 350 majors, 25 full-time faculty and 8 part-time faculty, and support staff including slide librarian/curator, lab technician, and 3D technicians, housed in nearly 55,000 square feet of new, state-of-the-art facilities. The mission of the department of art and design is to foster a dynamic learning environment that critically embraces traditional artistic areas as well as newly emerging technologies. Our rigorous programs are served by a highly committed and dedicated faculty, collegial rapport and cooperation across disciplinary lines, a history of effective and respected leadership, and a focused dedication to excellence in undergraduate education and artistic preparation.

Grand Valley State University is a thriving, growing institution with a strong emphasis on the liberal arts. The university is nestled between Grand Rapids, a metropolitan area of 250,000, and the beaches of Lake Michigan, and is a three hour drive from both Detroit and Chicago.
