Course
Description:
This course will introduce you to some of the most important and well-known Spanish and Spanish American short story writers in the late 19th and 20th Century. We will study this varied selection of texts within their contexts, so you will gain an awareness of the cultures within which they were produced. Additionally, we will examine some non-literary modes of telling stories, such as music, photography, film and painting. You will also have the opportunity to read stories aloud, tell stories in your own words, and participate in collaborative story writing.

By the end of the semester, you should:
Have developed reading strategies that will help you comprehend written texts in Spanish.
Have an appreciation of the wealth of Spanish and Spanish American short stories, and of the various modes of telling stories.
Be
acquainted with the most important short fiction writers in

familiar with various socio-cultural contexts in 20th-Century
Have the ability to tell a story, and be more fluent while reading aloud.
Be acquainted with on-line resources for Spanish and Spanish American narrative and culture.
*** Prerequisite for this course is a C or higher (not C-) in Spanish 202 or permission of instructor.
