Lesson Two - Loads of Codes

Objective: 1. The students will learn of a variety of coding methods that are used in today’s world to help us get along

2. The students will attempt to create their own number pattern code.

Anticipatory Set: Bring in mail that has been sent with the bar code on it, bring in credit cards and a passport for demonstration and illustration.

Input:

Methods of Presentation: - discussion - demonstration - group work

Previous Knowledge - knowledge of the mail system and credit cards

Task Components

- TLW see how the all of the mentioned coding systems work

- TLW work in groups to continue learning this information

- TLW read sheets given out by the teacher explaining these methods

Thinking Levels

- Knowledge: recall previous information

- Comprehension: be able to read and use information

- Application: will be able to tell if codes are valid

- Analysis: will be able to tell the difference between the codes

- Synthesis: attempt to code with own code

- Evaluation: complete worksheet given

Modeling

- Teacher will model the codes as explained in given sheets.

- Teacher will provide examples of valid and invalid codes.

Check for Understanding

- All students will test validity of codes in groups.

Guided Practice

- TLW complete in class worksheet of different codes

- TLW review handouts on own in class

Independent Practice

- TLW attempt to create own coding method using patterns of numbers.
