Lesson Three - Coding with matrices

Objective: The students will learn to code messages using 2 x 2 matrices.

Anticipatory Set:. Have a message written on the board already in the matrices to get the students thinking along the lines of matrices.

Input:

Methods of Presentation:

- discussion - demonstration - group work

Previous Knowledge

- Knowledge of 2x2 matrix multiplication

- Knowledge of the determinate of matrices and the inverses of matrices

- Knowledge of functions

Task Components

- TLW discuss why this method of coding works

- Teacher will pass out method of coding and present proof as to why it works.

- Teacher will use students input to code a problem

- TLW work in groups to code messages of other groups

Thinking Levels

- Knowledge: recall information about matrices

- Comprehension: be able to see use of information in a new format

- Application: code messages in new format

- Analysis: tell if matrix has an inverse if decoding is possible

- Synthesis: develop own coding matrix

- Evaluation: perform complete process of coding using matrices

Modeling

- Teacher will review matrix multiplication and all other matrix skills needed to code.

- Teacher will demonstrate method to code.

- Teacher will guild students through coding and decoding messages.

Check for Understanding

- teacher will give message to decode and see if students understand process.

- teacher will ask questions of students and look at faces

Guided Practice

- TLW work independently and in groups on this coding method.

Independent Practice

- TLW decode given message with given coding matrix

- TLW code message to give to teacher so that teacher can decode.
