Lesson Six - RSA Coding and Current Issues in Cryptography

Objective: 1. The student will understand the method behind RSA coding.

2. The students will share thoughts and do research on some current issues of coding.

Anticipatory Set: Share articles with students on the security issues on the internet and ask students how coding is done today in the current times.

Input:

Methods of Presentation:

- discussion - demonstration - group work

Previous Knowledge

- prime numbers, modular arithmetic, exponentials

Task Components

- TLW learn the method of RSA coding.

- TLW research on the internet and in the library current issues in cryptography.

- TLW demonstrate understand of how RSA works.

Thinking Levels

- Knowledge: recall previous information

- Comprehension: relate concepts to new methods

- Application: see why RSA difficult to break in use

- Analysis: set limits resonable for class

- Synthesis: generate ideas of security and protection

- Evaluation: complete worksheet and write paper on issues

Modeling

- Teacher will demonstrate the way to code using RSA.

- Teacher will review any necessary information so students understand work.

Check for Understanding

- Ask questions of students as work goes on.

- Have students work together in groups.

Guided Practice

- TLW complete work in groups

- TLW talk with peers about current issues in coding led by the teacher

Independent Practice

- TLW write paper after doing reserch on issues in crypotgraphy to wrap up unit.
