COMMON TRANSPOSING INSTRUMENTS
Bb: Bb Trumpet, Bb Clarinet, Soprano Saxophone, Tenor Saxophone, Bass Clarinet, Treble Clef Euphonium
F: French horn, English horn
Eb: Alto Saxophone, Baritone Saxophone, Eb Soprano Clarinet, Eb Alto Clarinet, Eb Contrabass Clarinet
C: Piccolo, Chimes, Orchestra Bells, Double Bass, Contrabassoon
TRANSPOSING FROM THE INSTRUMENT’S WRITTEN MUSIC TO SOUNDING PITCH (given the instrumental part, do this on the piano) NOTE: CLICK ON “EX_” FOR NOTATED EXAMPLES
•Bb Trumpet, Bb Clarinet: change Key to M2 lower, change pitches to M2 lower (EX 1)
•Tenor Sax, Bass Clarinet, Treble Clef Euphonium: change Key to M2 lower, change pitches to M2 plus octave lower (EX 2)
•French horn, English horn: change Key to P5 lower, change pitches to P5 lower (EX 3)
•Alto Sax, Alto Clarinet: change Key to M6 lower (m3 higher), change pitches to M6 lower (m3 higher and 8va lower) (EX 4)
•Bari Sax, Eb Contrabass Clarinet: change Key to M6 lower (m3 higher), change pitches to M6 lower PLUS 8va lower (NOTE: parts are written in treble clef but sound in bass clef) (EX 5)
•Piccolo, Chimes: same key, pitches are one octave higher
•Orchestra Bells (glockenspiel): same key, pitches are 2 octaves higher
•Double Bass, Contrabassoon: same key, pitches are an octave lower
