I came to Grand Valley State University in the Fall of 1993, received tenure in 1999, and was promoted to Full Professor in 2006.  I've had the opportunity to teach a wide variety different courses, including college algebra, calculus, communicating in mathematics, linear algebra, differential equations, operations research, vector calculus, modern algebra, real analysis, and complex analysis. Although my graduate training was in the field of Fourier analysis, my research interests since coming to GVSU have encompassed discrete dynamical systems, real analysis, and mathematical programming.

Currently I am writing a linear and nonlinear programming text, one that promotes active learning, focuses on real-world applications, and incorporates the Maple computer algebra system. I hope to have this text published in the near future and to use it in the GVSU Operations Research course (MTH 360).

Student-related activities have always been of interest to me. I am involved with  Pi Mu Epsilon (PME), the national mathematics honor society, both as the GVSU chapter advisor and also as a member of the national PME council.

Away from GVSU, I enjoy traditional, Greenland-style sea kayaking. This style of kayaking utilizes the narrow, Inuit paddle (sometimes called a "stick"), which is well-suited for long distance paddling and rolling (see below). I hold the British Canoe Union 4- Sea Kayaking Skill Award and have paddled extensively on the Great Lakes.
