Celebrating 40 Years of Exercise Physiology
The Human Performance Laboratory at Ball State University is honored to host the annual MWACSM meeting September 29 – October 1, 2005. This year’s meeting will highlight what we have learned about the human body over the past four decades. Given the broad range of topics that have been investigated at the HPL since its inception, there should be something for everyone. Studies on athletes, community health, obesity, children, aging, spaceflight and nutrition are part of the past and current research agenda of the HPL. The meeting will take a unique approach by profiling topics that address the scientific findings of human health and performance over the past 40 years. By combining the past with the present we hope to provide a sense of where we have been and where we are going with regards to human health and fitness issues. Scientists, Alumni, colleagues and friends that have helped shape the landscape of applied human physiology will be on hand to share their expertise and experiences. Please join us as we celebrate 40 years of exercise physiology.

Thursday Evening, September 29

Ball State's Human Performance Lab BSU's Adult Fitness Program- Run by Grad Students (since 1965) Annual Meeting- and also the 40th anniversary of the Human Performance Lab (one of the longest running Human Performance Labs in the USA)
Students Meet Dr. David Costill. Yeah, he wrote your Exercise Phys Book! Exercise testing Lab. Similar to GVSU. Note they have a special body comp analyzer in the background (called "Bod Pod) Grad Student studying force velocity dynamics of a single myofibril. They do research for NASA regarding muscle changes in space flight.
Tour of Bioenergetics lab. Running, cycling, muscle biopsies.... Biomechanics Lab is doing research with a machine that vibrates up and down (think bone density stim). Here a GVSU student stretches while it vibrates. Students meet Adult Fitness Program Director Dr Lenny Kaminsky (top left) and meet one of his current grad students and GVSU Alumni Jim Rejc (05).. bottom right
Biomechanics also has a smith rack. That's a special force plate on the ground, to measure force production during the lifts. An environmental chamber (looks like a walk-in cooler) can create almost any temperature and humidity environment. Large, open Biomechanics video space. Also has force platforms
One of many biochem las, where muscle blood, and anything else coming from the body is analyzed! DEXA-Dual Energy Z-ray Absorptiometry. Yeah... a thing that measures bone density as well as fat and muscle. Looks like a big photo copy machine to me.... Dr. Glass worked at Ball State in 1990 as a 25 year old instructor in the lab. Can you find him? (he's wearing contacts)
