On the classification problem of the seven-dimensional Lie algebras with six-dimensioanl nilradical

Since coming to GVSU I have been involved in conducting research with undergraduates. I have mentored seven summer projects resulting in publication with students. The classification problem (as I call it) consists of 32 mini projects. We have finished 10 of them so far. I anticipate to cover 3-4 cases for the 2018 REU.

Overview and Introduction

The title of the project is far more complicated than the problem itself. To get some basic background to what is this project about, please watch this 20-min presentation.

What will this research involve?

This summer research will involve investigating the classification of the seven-dimensional Lie algebras with a six-dimensional nilradical  isomorphic to 4 of the 22 cases left.

The first week, you will get all the necessary background tools you need. You will also need be introduced to the Lie algebra and Differential Geometry packages in Maple. By the second week, you will take on the wheel.

Desirable experiences for applicants

Applicants should have strong background in Linear Algebra and Modern Algebra. Experience in programing can be helpful (any computer language). We will use Maple for the purpose of the project,  previous experience with Maple would be nice but not necessary.

How to apply
