Assistant Professor of Mathematics
As you might have noticed above, I am an Assistant Professor of Mathematics at Grand Valley State University. I hold a Bachelor’s degree from Calvin College and a Ph.D. from Western Michigan University, where I studied under the direction of Allen Schwenk. If you’d like to see my mathematical genealogy (which makes me look much smarter than I actually am), click here.
My
mathematical interests span several different areas, but my research is focused
mainly on mathematical voting theory.
summary.) I recently co-authored a book
on the mathematics of voting and elections with Rick Klima from Appalachian
State University. Our book was published
in May 2005 by the American Mathematical Society and can be found on the AMS
web site or Barnes
and Noble. For a sneak preview of
the book, click here or here to
download MP3 files (~20 MB) of a radio show that Rick and I were guests on in
July and September of 2005. During these
interviews, we discussed a number of topics related to mathematical voting
theory, most of which can be found in our book.
Being a mathematics professor at a student-centered
university, I spend most of my professional time teaching courses throughout
the undergraduate mathematics curriculum.
I believe that the principal goal of a mathematics education should be
to teach students to think critically and
to solve problems in a creative yet precise manner. Over the past few years, I have become a
strong proponent of inquiry-based learning, largely because of my interactions
with colleagues here at
When I am not at school, I enjoy playing guitar, being
outdoors, and spending time with friends and family. My wife, Melissa, and I have been married
since November of 1999, and we had our first child, a little boy named Caden
Michael, on
