Field Facilities
The AEP works closely with the Barrow Arctic Science Consortium (BASC) and has established good rapport with the North Slope communities. BASC serves as a liaison between the research community and the people of the North Slope by assisting in the collection, preservation, and dissemination of information with the goal of enhancing science and education. The AEP receives long-term and detailed field season climate data from a NOAA Climate Monitoring and Diagnostic Laboratory (CMDL) located near Barrow. This CMDL collected Barrow’s famous long-term record of atmospheric CO2 and methane. In Barrow the research team depends on the laboratory supported by The National Science Foundation (NSF) via BASC and VECO Polar Resources . The laboratory is near Ilisagvik College and has email, phone, and fax access. It serves as a place for the team to meet, prepare for fieldwork, process samples, and enter data. The convenient location of the laboratory allows easy communication between our research team and Ilisagvik faculty, the North Slope Wildlife Division, and the BASC. The AEP has an agreement with the BASC for use of computer facilities and additional logistics needs in Barrow.
In Atqasuk the research team is housed in a residential house maintained by BASC. The AEP has agreements with locals for use of equipment and the Atqasuk Corporation to do research on their land. The laboratory space as well as field tents are provided by BASC through its NSF contract. |
