How to get involved

Contact the Instructor:

Before you begin any martial arts instruction, you should speak with the instructor to see if the school you are considering is offering what you are looking for. Please call Steve at X3879 during the day to learn a little more about the school. (see also the description of the school found on this website). You may also contact the school via e-mail at kungfu@river.it.gvsu.edu.

Schedule a starting day:

Since new students begin throughout the year, it is necessary that we know when these students will begin to train. This allows the instructor to plan the introductory classes more efficiently. Some students want to come and watch a class before they decide. We would prefer that you come and try a class or two. Without trying the drills and exercises, it is hard for beginners to get much understanding of what is being shown. It is a school policy that the student should take the first 3 classes without paying. If you feel that the school is what you are looking for, then you may choose to pay and continue the training. If you would still like to see a class first, this is always acceptable as long as two simple rules are followed:

Practice days are Monday and Wednesday (Multi purpose Room of the Fieldhouse)

Beginner's Class 5:30 to 7:00 pm

Advanced Class 7:00 to 8:30 pm

On your first day:

Wear sweatpants, a T-shirt and tennis shoes to train in. Loose fitting pants from another style of martial art are acceptable as long as there are no insignia on them from that style. Shorts are discouraged. There is a Golden Mountain Kung Fu Academy T-Shirt if you eventually wish to purchase one, however there is no required uniform.

Arrive early for your classes and make sure you are warmed up and ready to go by class time. On your first day, do some gentle stretching of the legs as you wait for class to begin. Relax, everybody in the room had their first day and chances are if you begin at the start of a semester, there will be many others who start with you.

You do not need to bring payment for the semester on the first day. When you have tried a few classes, decide if it is what you want. If you choose to remain and train with the club, the fee is $40 for each 14 week school semester. The fee is the same no matter when in the semester you begin.

You will be asked to sign a standard injury release form prior to being allowed to practice with the club. If you wish to have additional time to fully review this document, obtain one from Steve (X3879) prior to your first day.

If you have previous experience:

If you already have experience in another art this will no doubt help you in your learning of Long Fist Kung Fu. Experience in other arts is not, however, a replacement for training in the basics of Long Fist. Please bring an open mind and a willingness to start at the beginning. Your previous experience should help you pick up the movements of the system more quickly.
