Craig VanWieren
Dream Journal (excerpt)

The oddest, most horrifying dream I had took place at a church I attended as a child. The setting was Calvary Christian Reformed Church in Holland. Several graphic design students (odd) and myself were up in the balcony. None of use were paying attention to the sermon, rather we were making paper airplanes and snowboarding off a ramp we made from a pew. After a while, I went downstairs to take communion in the front of the church. There was a bowl on a table up front that said $5 to attend church and $2 to meet for youth group at the other Victorian building out back. I thought it was odd to pay for youth group, so I sneaked into the building during the sermon. It was cold and run down. I came to an old building within the building with a door in the front and sheets hanging up over broken windows. I had heard about this building and we were told never to touch it. However, I disobeyed the rules and lifted up a bed sheet to reveal what was on the other side. I was immediately attacked by a young boy in a blue jacket with scary gray eyes covered in maggots. I shielded myself as he gave me a giant bear hug and whispered, “free me.” I quickly shoved the boy down when I noticed I was covered in maggots from head to toe. I sprinted out of the building in disbelief. I knew I had to confess to Pastor Jack about the incident, so I went into the sanctuary to find him. This time, the church was in an eerie silence with no one around. I slowly walked down a long hallway where I found him locking his office door. I told him I had a confession to make. He peered at me like he knew what I had done, and then opened his office door. I took a seat across from him and proceeded to tell him what I saw. Next, I noticed a young boy dashing from bush to bush outside the window. He finally came to the window and asked if we had batteries. Jack got up from his desk, locked the window, and closed the blinds. He was outraged. I explained that the boy must have beena ghost. He then pulled up a seat uncomfortably close to mine. I was extremely nervous. Then he looked at me and said, “That boy is not a ghost; he is real but lacks his soul.” I told him I didn’t understand. Then I felt ice cold fingers on the back of my neck as he whispered, “you can free him, just give him your soul.” I swiftly turned and glanced at his face. He had turned into a vampire with gray, lifeless eyes and saliva dripping from protruding fangs.
