Surrealist Text (excerpt)


(Editor’s note: These “narratives” were based on a process of fusing together disparate fragments of story and dialogue encountered while channel surfing. The inspiration for this project was the early Surrealist practice of wandering in and out of movies in progress, allowing the different film fragments to merge into one hybridized narrative.)



...Before the cops could question Joe anymore the police scanner picks up an accident at the rack track. It’s Katie and John’s favorite place to hang out so the police leave to investigate. To not raise any suspicion the police send two girls in an old van.

The girls arrive at the front drive expecting to meet the chief of police there but he doesn't show. They decide to go in without him and stumble upon a man lying on the floor with a bullet through his head.

"He’s dead," one girl exclaims.

The other girl not caring about the man begins to check out the house at the track. She notices that the ceiling has some cracks in it, which could pose a problem if the house goes on the buying market. The girl moves into the kitchen and begins to check out the appliances which are all outdated. By this time the other girl joins the house tour. She sees out the kitchen window a beautiful backyard and wants to go check it out.

The two girls move outside and run into the police chief who happens to also be a realtor. The girls tell him of the dead body but he can see that they are more interested in the possibility of buying the house, so he shows them the garden area. They are very satisfied with the garden but one girl sees severe water damage on the house outside just by the gutters. This is another strike against buying the house...
