College of Education and our department
As a faculty member, I embrace the concept of service to the wider community, the field in which I work, and to help GVSU and the College of Education improve and grow.
Over the years that I’ve been a faculty member at GVSU in the College of Education, I have been involved in a variety of university, college and unit/department service activities. Perhaps most significant was developing a proposal to offer the first fully online degree program at GVSU - which was approved by GVSU faculty governance in 2010 and received approval in 2011 - a process that took over three (3) years to complete (2007-2010) and required approval of a prospectus as well as a final plan. I helped write a formal request submitted by the Provost office to the North Central Association/Higher Learning Commission (NCA/HLC) for approval of our online M.Ed. degree in educational technology.
I have also been active in various university committees and task forces, including membership on the University Academic Senate (UAS), University Curriculum Committee (UCC), on the Provost’s Online Graduate Degree Policy Task Force (OGDPTF) and at the GVSU Online Education Forum.
Within the College of Education, I chaired the College Curriculum Committee for several years, have chaired search committees, and now sit on our department personnel committee. I’ve also taken a leadership role as coordinator of our graduate educational technology degree program.
To the profession and community
In the field of educational technology, I spent 8-years as a reviewer for the Journal of Research on Technology in Education (JRTE), as well as a reviewer for the Journal of Educational Computing Research (JECR). In the area of community service, with colleagues from the COE & the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (CLAS), we have provided evaluation and professional development for teachers at Allendale Public Schools (APS) in support of their 1:1 computing initiative. This 3-year effort resulted in significant uses of technology by the secondary teachers at APS. I also reviewed a textbook for McGraw-Hill and have consulted on a variety of educational projects around Michigan.
