Personal Trainer
Job Setting
Some personal trainers are employed full time at health and fitness facilities, while others are private contractors that have clients at different facilities (they "rent" facility space from the club). Some facilities may look like corporate wellness facilities, some may be YMCA-type settings or sport performance facilities.

Clients
Clients will vary by location and even within day to day activities. You may work with a wide range of fitness and health conditions. Clients may be fit, or maybe obese with diabetes. Clients may have musculoskeletal disorders and cardiovascular risk factors. You need to be knowledgeable in many areas!

What are the qualifications needed?

In some cases a college degree is not required, but in these cases the pay is at the bottom end of the continuum. Most expect the following:

    1. The American College of Sports Medicine (Personal Trainer or Health Fitness Specialist)
    2. The National Strength and Conditioning Association (Personal Trainer or CSCS)
    3. American Council on Exercise (Personal Training)
    4. National Academy of Sports Medicine (Personal Training)

What is the Pay?
Pay will vary depending on the geographic location as well as client base. Part time may be as little as $10 per hour, to more than $20 per hour for full time (25-35K). National averages are $36,000-$49,000. Top personal trainers can earn much higher salaries, but these are rare positions.
