Investigations

There will be several happenings throughout the term: readings, performances, exhibits and things of that nature. You are required to complete one investigation in which you attend the event in question and respond to the event in the form of a short story scene, a flash or a poem, much like the studies we've done for our class—alternatively, you might imagine the outline for a possible longer story you might write. Do not simply summarize what went on, as that isn't the point. The point is to use the investigations to find material for later use, for new poems or stories for the future—that's what writers do. The investigation is worth forty possible points, and should be written like it was one of the studies we do for class. I’ll accept investigations at any time in the term, the last opportunity to turn it in being along with the final portfolio.

Note that while I encourage you to attend as many of Grand Valley Writers Series events as you can, I will not offer additional investigations for extra credit. Because an A+ is not available as an assessment of student work, extra credit isn't really fair.

Note also that while I have tried to collect events that might be relevant and/or interesting, I make no guarantees about the quality of the event itself. What you do with what you get is up to you.

The following is a list of events that I think might be a good fit for an Investigation. Additionally, anything listed on the GVSU Arts Calendar is fair game too. If you have an idea of something I should add, or if you want to propose an Investigation that isn't listed, let's talk.
