Overview You have a "public_html" folder on your
N: drive. By placing files in this "public_html" directory,
you publish them to the world. If your GVSU user name is "smithm",
then your web pages will be found on the web at For example, if you put a file "homework1.htm" in your public_html directory, then you can view it from your browser (e.g., Internet Explorer) at www2.gvsu.edu/~smithm/homework1.htm If no file is specified, the file "index.htm" from your public_html directory is automatically downloaded. Because of this, people usually name the first Home Page they want people to see "index.htm". The conventional way to name files is "filename.htm" (without the final "l". So all files can be named liked this: file.htm But notice this important exception: the default page (if someone enters your web address without specifying which file to look at as in www2.gvsu.edu/~smithm ) is index.htm and it is case sensitive. You publish web documents by transferring them to your GVSU account using FTP. FTP stands for "File Transfer Protocol", a standardized way that has evolved for one machine to send files to another. The steps to do this are described below.
2. "Publish" Your Homepage on the Web You will publish web documents saving files to the public_html folder on your N: drive or by transferring your files to your GVSU account using FTP
