Like Ceratium, Euglena is a phytoflagellate.  The euglenids as a group illustrate how difficult it is to distinguish ‘plant-like’ organisms from ‘animal-like’ organisms among the protozoans.  About 1/3 of the approximately 40 genera have chloroplasts and are fully autotrophic.  The others lack chloroplasts, ingest or absorb their food, and are heterotrophic.
