Mitch Cope visited the Creston studio on March 18th, 2005. During the visit he gave a public lecture on his work.
The artist served as the project coordinator and co-curator of the Detroit component of the Shrinking Cities project. Shrinking cities is an international and interdisciplinary study examining the loss of employment and population and erosion of infrastructure in cities around the world. Detroit shared company with Shrinking Cities projects in Manchester/Liverpool in Britan, Ivanovo in Russia, and Heille/Leipzig in Germany. Collectively, these projects have observed decreasing inner-city populations throughout the world and have discovered startling trends amongst industrialized nations.
Mitch is currently involved in the M.O.R.E. (Manufacturers Of Real Excellence) project, which has documented the patterns of marketing between art and business communities. He is also working with international artist Marjetica Potrc as the Detroit coordinator for her project with the Nobel Peace Center in Oslo, Norway, for which she received a grant to install wind turbines within the city of Detroit. Cope's work as an artist and curator has been recognized both nationally and internationally.
