A COMPETENT INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC EDUCATOR IS:


A. An outstanding human being

  1. 1.Exhibits maturity in all situations.

  2. 2.Can withstand frustration and criticism.                 

  3. 3.Is physically capable and hard-working.                

  4. 4.Is punctual.

  5. 5.Is organized, able to prioritize.     

  6. 6.Is self-disciplined.

  7. 7.Is self-motivated, curious, and creative.                      

  8. 8.Loves and seeks out the learning and the arts.


B. An outstanding musician

  1. 1.Can perform at a semi-professional level on at least one instrument.                       

  2. 2.Can apply knowledge learned about any style period or composer to the study of any composition. 

  3. 3.Can apply knowledge learned about music theory to the study of any composition.

  4. 4.Can use her/his voice to communicate composer intent. 

  5. 5.Can use the keyboard to communiicate composer intent.

  6. 6.Can evaluate quality music and performance at the level of a connoisseur.                      

  7. 7.Is constantly listening to unfamiliar music of many syles, thereby expanding understanding.

  8. 8.Loves music.


C. An outstanding teacher

  1. 1.Loves children and tries to understand them.                             

  2. 2.Is empathetic.

  3. 3.Understands evaluation and the need for  accurate measurement.

  4. 4.Is skilled at classroom management techniques.                           

  5. 5.Seeks out continuing education through entire teaching career.

  7. 7.Works to be free from bias and prejudice.                           

  8. 8.Is able to communicate effectively with students of all ages, parents, and other adults.

D. An outstanding music teacher

  1. 1.Can motivate students to perform music well.

  3. 3.Can conduct any school ensemble skillfully using conducting gestures.

  4. 4.Can deal with the many logistical aspects of performance, touring, fund-raising, grading, etc. efficiently.

  5. 5.Understands the philosophical, sociological, and historical aspects of music education.

  6. 6.Can design an appropriate curriculum for any level of a general music class.

  7. 7.Obtains membership in professional organizations, reads journal, attends conferences and workshops

  8. 8.Understands contemporary standards and applies them to unit and lesson plans.


E. An outstanding instrumental music teacher

  1. 1.Can diagnose, aurally & visually, and solve any problem encountered while a student is playing an instrument.

  2. 2.Can design an approriate curriculum for instrumental study and instrumental ensembles.

  3. 3.Can read and transpose at sight any instrumental score.

  4. 4.Can accompany any first-year instrumental solo on the piano.

  5. 5.Can play on keyboard at sight (including transposing) any student line of music.               

  6. 6.Understands basic instrument repair.                

  7. 7.Knows how to get information about selection and purchase quality musical instruments.
