Internship Coordinator:

Description: Internship is the culminating experience of a student's academic career. It is a time to implement many of the knosledges, skills and abilities developed during your academic preparation in Exercise Science. As such the student MUST have completed their coursework prior to internship, or be in their last semester of coursework at the time of internship.


Procedure:

1.    Attend the REQUIRED intern meeting, one semester prior to your internship.

2.    Bring a completed resume and cover letter for review.

3.    Approved as eligible for internship by Intern Coordinator

4.    Begin search for intern sites (5-10 sites minimum). Apply!

5.    Review possible sites with Intern coordinator. Remember Intern Coordinator MUST approve your internship! Do not accept  an internship without Coordinators approval. In some cases, there may be special liability insurance requirements, affiliation contracts and other requirements you may not be aware of. THE INTERN COORDINATOR HAS FINAL SAY ON APPROVAL.

6. Meet with Intern coordinator prior to leaving for internship to review intern manual.

You should have a site approved by midterm. You may then need to inquire about housing and travel. Be sure to register for the hours!  Remember, an internship is a JOB. Treat is as such. We ASSIST with finding an internship, we do NOT do it for you.

Alticor (Formerly Amway) in  Grand Rapids
Alticor (Amway) Corporate Wellness 

This is an unpaid internship, 8-12 weeks in length. The program is operated by Corporate Fitness
Sytems (which has a broad reach in fitness/wellness facilities). Students will work approximately 20
hours per week, and be involved with the employee incentive program, fitness assessments,
personal training, orientations and recreational programs. Sites include a facility in East Grand
Rapids, Bridgewater Club in Grand Rapids and Charleveaux Club. Duyring the last two week of
the internship, students will rotate facilities to gain exposure to a wider variety of experiences.

The Wellness Center, a Metropolitan/Spectrum Health Service, has provided health and wellness services for the
past 16 years to over 500 corporations in Michigan. Our client list includes Amway, Metropolitan Hospital, Bissell
Inc., Spartan Stores, and Spectrum Health. As consultants and service providers, The Wellness Center is
recognized for innovative employee health risk assessments, health promotion programming and health care cost
containment plans. 

The Wellness Center is seeking applications for internships from qualified undergraduate and graduate-level
students with backgrounds in health and wellness. This is an opportunity for students to become active members
within our progressive programs. 

The Wellness Center's internship program offers a wide variety of practical and educational experiences in the
areas of assessment, program planning, marketing, implementation, and evaluation. They will assist with the
Executive Physical Program, Spectrum Health Promotions Program and Corporate Programs. One project will be
expected of each intern during their internship. 

Interns at The Wellness Center serve a 12-15 week period, committing to 20-40 hours per week. Current CPR
certification is required. Interns will receive a $150-300 monthly stipend.

Daimler Chrysler Corporation (Health Fitness Corporation) 

Health Fitness Corporation, one of the largest corporate fitness management companies, offers excellent internship opportunities for students looking for corporate fitness center experience.The Healthy Activity Center (Auburn Hills, MI) has a 26,000 sq ft.facility with cardiovascular equipment, strength training and free weights. It also houses a 2,000 sq ft exercise room offering 50 exercise classes per week, and indoor running track, and staff provide personalized exercise testing and prescription. 

Internship Objectives: The internship program objectives are to provide the student or recent graduate with practical experience in employee health and fitness programs and to prepare them for entry level employment in the field. Further, Health Fitness Corporation believes it is valuable to interact and share ideas with newly emerging fitness professionals. 

Responsibilities: The intern responsibilities may include, but are not exclusive to: 

Conducting fitness assessments 
Designing exercise prescriptions and conducting program orientations 
Supervision of the exercise floor 
Planning and developing motivational programs 
Leading group exercise classes 
Utilizing customized fitness software programs 

Intern Sessions

The internship requirement will be 16 weeks in length. Interns will be expected to work a 40 hour week and to experience all shifts and hours of operation. Internsh will be accepted 3 times per year:

Health Fitness Corporation. PCC Fitness Center 
General Motors Pontiac- Centerpoint Campus 

Health Fitness Corporation has grown from two employees and one client to more than 500 employees with over 150 managed programs and additional consulting projects. In April 1995, Health Fitness Physical Theraphy merged with Fitness Systems and became a wholly owned subsidiary of Health Fitness Corporation. The combined includes 4 units: Corporate health and Fitness (120 managed programs), Hospital health and Fitness (6 managed programs), and Physical Therapy (15 free standing clinics, 5 on-site physical therapy centers and 6 on-site ergonomic programs) 

Professional Staff: HFC requires that professional staff have a bachelor's or master's degree in exercise science or a related degree and recommend ACSM certification. In addition, we consider fitness center floor supervision to be one of the most important service qualities which distinguishes a professionally managed program. 

Centerpoint campus: The fitness center is approximately 7,200 square feet, with an eligible population of 12,000. The hours of operation are Monday- Friday from 5:30am  to 7:00pm. The fitness center houses a complete strength training circuit, treadmills, bicycles, stair climbers, elliptical crosstrainers, a rower, a ski machine, free weights, and a group exercise room. 

Internship Objectives
The Health Fitness Corporation at Genral Motors allows interns to step from classroom to worksite. They will have the opportunity to gain solid comprehension of corporate health and fitness through active involvement in a wide range of activities and programs including fitness assessments, exercise reccommendations, orientations, group exercise, one-on-one training, health promotion programming, and facility management. These individuals will function as part of the Health Fitness Corporation team and be challenged to dircetly contribute their knowledge while gaining a broad experience in corporate health and fitness. 
  Therefore, the objectives of the Health Fitness Corporation intership program are to provide students or recent graduates with practical experience in employee health and fitness programs and to prepare them for entry level employment in the feild. Furthmore, Health Fitness Corporation believes strength and success are greatly founded in the knowledge and capabilities of its staff. Thus, the intership program is designed to be mutually rewarding to Health Fitness Corporation, fitness program participants,
and interns.  To meet these objectives, interns will be given responsibilities similar to those of the Health Fitness Corporation fitness professionals. These may include, but are not exclusive to: 

1. Signing up new members 

     Explaining membership enrollment procedures 
     Reviewing Health History forms and membership paperwork 
     Scheduling fitness assessment and orientations 

2. Exercise Testing 

     Exhibiting knowledge of the sub-maximal bike assessment protocol. 
     Demonstrating the ability to take body compostion, strength, endurance and flexibility tests, and to take resting heart rate
     and blood pressure measurements 
     Becoming familiar with PCC Fitness Center's fitness software 
     Reporting fitness findings to the participant and explaining the implications 

3. Giving exercise program orientations 

     Designing individual exercise prescriptions 
     Demonstrating the proper use of all the equipment 
     Explaining fitness concepts 

4.Program Planning

     Developing one major project, i.e., incentive program, educational seminar, or special event (as decided upon by the intern
     and internship coordiator) 
     Developing health promotion programs and/or recreational programs 
     Designing bulletin boards and/or promotional articles for company newsletter 

5. Supervising the exercise facility 

     Supervising the exercise floor 
     Correcting members who are using poor techniques 
     Participating in daily fitness center management and operations 

6. Leading Group Exercise Class 

     Participating in a variety of group exercise classes 
     Leading a variety of group exercise classes (as decided upon by the intern and intern coordiantor) 

7. Staffing the front desk 

     Welcoming new members and answering questions 
     Answering phones and scheduling appointments 
     Conducting facility tours for interested employees 

8. Evaluating Personal Progress 

     Metting with the intern coordinator every other week to discuss progress and projects 
     Submitting reports at the midpoint and conclusion of the internship

Personal Habits and Appearance 
Benefiting our roles a professional firm, our appearance should reinforce our participants and clients confidence in our ability to counsel them. Thus, all programs staff must maintain a clean, neat, professional appearnce at all times. Professional staff and interns attire should be appropriate for demonstrating exercise. Conservative clothing styles, hairstyles, and make-up are appropriate. Appropriate clothing is defined as: 

     Color coordinate warm-up suits of nylon type fabrics. No sweat pants please. 
     Business attire for meeting client liaison, or clothing suitable for the particular client environment.

Smoking is inconsistent with our message of promoting healthy lifestyles. Health Fitness Corporation strongly discourages smoking at managed facilities and prohibits smoking at Health Fitness Corporation headquarters.

Goal: To develop, market and implement wellness programs and initiatives for GVSU faculty and staff. To serve as liason between GVSU, Grand Rapids YMCA and the GVSU Wellness Center.

Michigan Heart, P.C.
located in the Ann Arbor area. Michigan Heart offers a six month, forty hours per week internship with a $5,000 stipend paid out biweekly. We accept students working towards or having finished their Bachelors and Masters degrees from all over the world. The program involves hands on training in standard, echocardiography and nuclear testing, as well as hands on training in all phases of cardiac and pulmonary rehabilitation. The practice houses over 35 cardiologists and 25 exercise physiologists who work towards developing your skills and confidence. We run over 15,000 stress tests per year and have over 400 cardiac rehab patients in our program. The internship program offers observations for open-heart surgery, cath lab procedures and many other areas. Our goal is to take your school knowledge to the next step and prepare you for a career in the Cardiac Rehab/Stress Testing profession.

The recreation department at Casa Ybel Resort on Sanibel Island, FL is ready to begin the recruitment process for 2006 spring and summer interns. Each internship is approximately 14 weeks. I am looking to hire junior or senior level Recreation or Leisure Studies majors. Qualified candidates have previous experience leading large groups of elementary aged children, water safety experience, and 1st Aid/CPR training. Candidates must be outgoing, flexible, and patient. Velocity Sports Performance of Willowbrook is a 20,000 square-foot, state-of-the-art, multi-surface facility that provides the highest quality of sports performance to athletes of skill levels and ages. Our programs focus on all areas of athletic performance including speed, agility, and coordination, strength and power, mobility and flexibility, energy system development, and injury prevention. We are currently looking for interns and part-time coaches for this upcoming summer.

Candidates must have:
• an educational background in Exercise Science, Exercise Physiology, Movement Science or similar health and fitness related fields
• the ability to listen, learn and adapt to different teaching styles,
• exceedingly high motivation, energy level and physical endurance to coach up to 6 hours a day
• great people skills and a high comfort level in working and communicating with age groups between 7 and 18

Job Description
The selected candidate will gain experience in the daily operations of a sports performance facility.  By the end of the internship, the intern will have experience and knowledge of sports performance training. He or she will be able to effectively teach prescribed activities and exercises to student athletes in small groups.  The intern will also assist in the maintenance and care of equipment, and assist in administrative duties as directed.
