In this undated postcard photo of the Place du Midi in La Ferté-Macé,
we can see a woman leaning over some "kind of hydrant" or "iron contrivance"
(Enormous Room 157). Could this be the pump where C and his fellow
inmates went to "catch water"? For the answer, continue to "an iron contrivance . . . " (page 2).
