Systems approach

A systems approach means that the conceptualization and analysis of a problem or question that is done for the purpose of answering a question, solving a problem, or establishing a management plan is done in context rather than in a manner that isolates parts of the system from the whole. One important aspect of the systems approach is the emphasis on identifying alternative solutions. Thus, if carried out loyally, the most expedient alternative solution can be selected and implemented to solve the problem.

The systems proposition provides relevance to the systems approach for answering a question or solving a problem.

Grant, et. al. presents a concise set of flow charts that provide, terminology, an overview, and a stepwise procedure that help the scholar understand and apply systems concepts to real world ecological and natural resource management issues.

The systems approach generally involves systems analysis and results in one or more models of the system of interest.
