Assignment 1

part one

Read "Differences Between Print Design and Web Design." Note that Neilsen concludes the article by saying:

Print design is highly refined, as evidenced by glancing through the recent book of award-winning designs. Web design is impoverished because too many sites strive for the wrong standards of excellence that made sense in the print world but do not make sufficient advances in interactivity.

Write a short paper (no more than one page, single spaced) that summarizes and comments on these very different standards of excellence. You may quote from the article (do so properly). I would also like you to make sure that you type your summary and comment using MSWord and pay special attention to how your work appears on the page. Use visual techniques and typography to make your paper easy to read and scan. Your visual techniques may include bullet lists, boldface type, an image, a chart you create in another program like Excel, or anything else you can think of in the very limited time available this period. When you save the file, name it "lastname.doc" on your N drive.

part two

Save this file you just created in Word to your hard drive (N: drive). If you don't know how to save to your N: drive, you need to figure that out--ask someone. Launch the FTP program and ftp the file to the following location:

ftp.novell.gvsu.edu

Login as: .login.first_letter_of_login .student (note the three dots or periods)
password: (your network password)

Note: You need to know your "GVSU login" to type in your user id. You MUST type your user id exactly as shown with all periods or it will not work. Your user id will be of the form:

.<login>.<first_letter_of_your_login>.student

Example: John Smith would be: .smithj.s.student

Keep in mind what you have just done: you FTP'd a Word file from the local machine you are working on (actually from the N drive which is a network folder available to your local machine) to the server on campus that hosts web pages, which is running a server to accept FTP transfer.

A fuller explanation is for FTP transfer to Novell is here.

Of course when you transfer web files to Novell, you must be sure to transfer them to the "public_html" subdirectory or you wont be able to view them at your web address which is:   www2.gvsu.edu/~loginname/

part three

Finally, take this same Word document, open it in Word, and then copy and paste it into a blank Dreamweaver file. Once the page has been inserted, reformat it for the web (play around, use some colors, change type styles and sizes, use bullet lists, etc. Just have fun formatting, it doesn't have to have a "professional" look).

When you are done messing with it, or when you are out of time, save it to a hard drive (again, use N: drive) and FTP the file to your Novell account and make sure you first switch to the "public_html" directory before you transfer, i.e., FTP the file. In the lab, you can simply save it to public_html on the N drive, but I'd like you to practice using FTP.

Now try viewing the page in your web browser. If you have a file called index.htm   open that file in your editor and create a link to the page you just created. Get help from one of your group members if you need it. Try to get all this done before the end of the hour!

Good luck. I'll be around to help.
