Project I (Resource Web Site)

Create a resource web page for your use in this course. The audience for this site is you and your classmates. Your site will be evaluated according to the six keys to successful web design outlined below. On the due date, you will need to submit a project description and analysis on your Project II page. This document should include the site URL and relevant comments and discussion of each of the six keys to successful web design.

Six Keys to Successful Web Design

  1. Smaller Is Always Better
  2. Strive for Simplicity
  3. Build Visual Contrast into Each Page
  4. Provide a Meaningful Hierarchy of Content
  5. Choose a Limited Color Palette
  6. Make Navigation Intuitive, Obvious, and Fast

Webmonkey is a sophisticated example of the kind of page I'd like you to build. Of course you won't have advertising banners and you probably won't be covering quite as much information. Nevertheless, you can see here what professional designers have done with their resource site. Keep in mind, I'm not asking you to use this entire Webmonkey site as a model, but this one page will give you some ideas about the kinds of links you might want to include and some ideas for how to organize and annotate your links.

Keep in mind that you should build a page that is useful to you and perhaps others in the class. Collect and organize links that offer advice on writing as well as advice on design and technical issues. I like the design of the Webmonkey site, but Web Tips from Project Cool shows you an example of a simpler design with a more narrow purpose. This Web Tips page has very good advice, and you should take a few minutes to read it.

You certainly may grab links from the Webmonkey site, but use Google look around, you'll find many interesting sites that can be great resources for you throughout the semester.
